SOME BASIC GUIDELINES FOR

THE CULTURE OF ALPINES

WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO GROW SUCH TINY PLANTS?

This question has some strong philosophical overtones. Obviously it will not appeal to everyone. You're definitely not going to get bushels of color for months on end if that's what you want. But after a century of excess when, more often than not, more has meant better, there are those of us who think small can be quite O.K. There is something quite inexplicably gratifying about diminutive plants in a natural setting. It can be calming and restful yet, somehow, inspirational and exhilarating. Children respond to these gardens in the same way they react to the miniaturization entailed in a doll's house. Elderly people who may no longer be able to garden at ground level can still garden a wall or a raised trough.

ARE YOU READY TO GIVE ALPINE GARDENING A TRY?

Now's the time. Ask for a membership application to the American Rock Garden Society if you wish additional information on the subject. There are also many books available which will give you far more complete information than is possible on these few pages. Perhaps the best known is "Manual of Alpine Plants" by Will Ingwersen,VMH, Cassell Publishers Ltd., Villiers House,41/47 Strand, London WC2N 5JE.
